Pastor Hardy will travel to South Korea, Scotland, and Northern Ireland in fall 2024.
Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church has received a grant to enable Rev. Hardy H. Kim to participate in the 2023 National Clergy Renewal Program. The Lilly Endowment grants are intended to help fund travel, pastoral coverage during the leave, and events and programs to help pastors share their experiences with the church community upon return.
Sunnyvale Presbyterian's sabbatical program provides for clergy (and staff members) to take a sabbatical every seven years for rest and renewal. The Lilly Endowment Grant funds ($46,700) will augment the church sabbatical budget. Hardy will take his sabbatical from August 29–November 30.
During his time of renewal, Pastor Hardy will be digging into the roots of his own spirituality by traveling to South Korea, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. There he will visit with various faith communities to see how they engage in peacemaking and how that faith can combat militarism and imperial oppression. He looks forward to bringing back stories to inspire our own ministry efforts at Sunnyvale Pres.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is a private foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. While those gifts remain the financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. Although the Endowment funds programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana. A principal aim of the Endowment’s religion grantmaking is to deepen and enrich the lives of Christians in the United States, primarily by seeking out and supporting efforts that enhance the vitality of congregations and strengthen the pastoral and lay leadership of Christian communities. The Endowment also seeks to improve public understanding of diverse religious traditions by supporting fair and accurate portrayals of the role religion plays in the United States and across the globe.
